Our Backyard – Aireys Inlet

Will we ever shake hands again? There are some people who love to shake hands at every opportunity. There are also those who shun the handshake. Do you have a strong grip, or a soft grip? Have you ever offered your hand and been ignored?

These complex social conventions appear to be a thing of the past and I can’t help but wonder if they will ever return to the way they were.

I sold a house recently to a gentleman and as we exchanged the contracts there was an uncomfortable moment where we both wondered what to do. To shake or not to shake? He didn’t appear the type of person who would want to touch elbows, so after looking at each other for a few awkward seconds, I stated talking about something totally unrelated.

As early as the 1920’s, articles appeared in the American Journal of Nursing that warned of hands being the agents of bacterial transfer and recommending that Americans adopt the Chinese custom at the time, shaking one’s own hand together when greeting a friend.

Perhaps I’ll try that with the next person I sell a property for and see how that works?
