20th September 2024
This weekend marks a busy start to the September school holidays in and around our small hamlet. The Surf Coast Century is drawing participants from all over for an ultra marathon featuring 50km and 100km races. Runners will take in breath taking views along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, including towering sea cliffs, remote beaches, and vibrant wildflower hinterlands, all the while pushing their limits amidst the natural beauty.
Don’t miss the Angair Wildflower and Arts Weekend at Memorial Hall, Anglesea. Enjoy stunning indigenous flower displays, guided walks, art exhibitions, and children’s activities. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for students and pensioners, and free for children. Proceeds support land conservation efforts, preserving the beauty of our region for future generations. Plus, the Aireys Inlet Primary School Students’ Artwork will be on display!
In other news, Australia faces pressure to follow the U.S. Federal Reserve’s significant interest rate cut. However, Treasurer Jim Chalmers highlighted differences in economic conditions between the U.S. and Australia, noting that the Reserve Bank of Australia will consider factors like inflation before making any decisions. While the U.S. has cut its rates by 50 basis points, Australia’s cash rate remains lower, with the last rate cut occurring in 2020. Australian mortgage holders are left wondering if the Reserve Bank will follow suit.
Despite a slowing economy and rising unemployment, Australia’s job market has shown resilience, with more than one million jobs potentially created since the Labor government took office. The upcoming labour force data will be closely watched, with some economists predicting a slight rise in unemployment. Strong public sector employment, particularly in the disability sector, has helped counter weaker private sector job creation.
