OUR BACKYARD – AIREYS INLET

This week, the Aireys Inlet Fire Brigade is once again calling on the Victorian Government to urgently fund the construction of their long promised new fire station. In a Surf Coast Times article (read article), members of the brigade explained that for more than a decade, our local volunteer crew has been operating from a small, outdated shed on Pearse Road. With no dedicated change rooms and barely a metre of space between trucks and gear for volunteers to suit up, the facility is no longer fit.

The CFA purchased land for a new, centrally located station on the Great Ocean Road back in 2018, but six years on, there’s still no sign of progress, despite Aireys being classified as one of the most at risk bushfire towns in the state. With one road in and out, the need for a fully operational and accessible fire station is urgent. The land is ready. The volunteers are ready. What’s missing is the funding and government action. If you would like to help please head to the brigade’s Facebook page and share their post or even better, write to our state MP, Richard Riordan, and let him know your thoughts.
