On 25 May, Biodiversity Legacy announced that it has secured the lease over nearly 30 hectares of the Painkalac Valley, described in its media release as the largest estuarine wetland on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.
According to the announcement, the acquisition was made possible through a donation from two local community members who are long-standing members of local organisations including Angair and AIDA. The funding has enabled the purchase of the existing 99-year lease and will also support the ongoing management of the land.
The land will be managed by the community-based Painkalac Project. A science-based masterplan for ecological restoration is proposed to be developed in consultation with the local community and relevant organisations, including CFA, Forest Fire Management Victoria, DEECA, Barwon Water, the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority, the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority, Surf Coast Shire, AIDA and Angair.
The Painkalac Project has also stated that it looks forward to working with the Wadawurrung Aboriginal Corporation as the plan is developed and implemented.
And this weekend also marks the beginning of the SENSE-ational Aireys Festival.
The festival will officially launch tonight at the iconic Aireys Inlet restaurant A La Grecque and is being presented by the Aireys Inlet Tourism and Traders Association.
The festival program will run each weekend from 29 May through to 21 June and celebrates the local businesses, services and experiences that make Aireys Inlet and the surrounding coast such a special place to live and visit, showcasing the diversity and quality of what is on offer throughout our community.
