Last weekend, we celebrated International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW). This is an annual event held on the third weekend of August each year. The event, which started in 1998, has developed into an international event and attracts over 500 lighthouse entries in over 40 countries. Our own Split Point Lighthouse in Aireys Inlet was adorned with international flags to celebrate the occasion. Split Point Lighthouse is still a vital working lighthouse for vessels navigating the treacherous waters of Bass Strait and still operates every night.

Have you ever seen a moving train of bright dots in the night sky? Early Thursday morning, I was lucky enough to see this falling star chain. After convincing myself, I had not seen my first UFO, Google confirmed it was, in fact Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites providing this stunning sight as they travel across the sky. The purpose of these satellites is to provide widespread internet access. 4,000+ Starlink satellites are in orbit as of July 2023, with plans to deploy more. If you want to see this “train of light”, the app below will help you track them. https://vitotechnology.com/apps/satellite-tracker
