Bank interest rates & savings accounts have been under the spot light this week, specifically with them being so low it’s hardly worth having cash in the account! With very little return on savings, older generations and pensioners in particular are complaining about how they can  generate a return on their investment.

The Reserve Bank of Australia have made comment; saying an ageing population is actually partly to blame for ultra-low interest rates. RBA governor Philip Lowe has said ageing societies and high savings are contributing to low interest rates.

Previously undisclosed internal RBA research estimates that demographic change will cause interest rates to be 4 percentage points lower by 2050 compared with the 1950s when many Baby Boomers were born.

“The need to fund consumption in retirement creates a precautionary saving motive for workers,” note RBA economists Elizabeth Kendall and Daniel Rees.

“Uncertainty about the time of death ensures that retirees do not fully draw down on their accumulated assets in retirement.

“All else equal, higher household saving boosts the capital-to-labour ratio, reducing the marginal product of capital and the neutral interest rate.”
